The ancient Greek city of Priene
<<< Back to blogs
Located approximately 45km from Apollonium Spa & Beach resort in Turkey, Priene was once an ancient Greek settlement of Ionia built at the base of Mount Mycale. Originally a coastal town constructed in the 4th century BC, today, due to several centuries of changing landscapes, it is an inland site.
The original position of the city has never been pinpointed, but it was believed to have been a deep water port with two harbours located on a peninsula.
Indications suggest Priene was a wealthy city with an abundance of fine urban residences built out of marble from a nearby quarry. A house once inhabited by Alexander the Great is among the dwellings that run on two sides of the avenue that connected the agora, or meeting place, to the western gate.
The area is fascinating and extensive and includes a superb stadium theatre and the iconic Temple of Athena. The ruins are generally considered to be the most spectacular example of an entire ancient Greek city still intact except for the ravages of time.
